PIPPI BEACH, YAMBA (Saturday, 29 October 2017): Coffs Harbour Boardriders have claimed the fourth event on the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle Series, taking out the coveted event following a series of hotly contested heats in playful two-foot waves at Pippi Beach.
The Coffs Harbour team put on a dominant display of surfing over the Teams division, which culminated in the final where four of their five surfers posted scores in the excellent range and allowed them to win the division convincingly and put them on top of the overall leaderboard.
“After just missing out on making the National Final last year, we all put in a lot of effort and made it a priority to qualify for it this year,” said former World Championship Tour surfer and Coffs Harbour local Lee Winkler. “The Coffs Harbour team has a lot of depth and it was great to see the team working together and supporting each other in each and every heat. We couldn’t be more stoked.”
Former Championship Tour surfer and Byron Bay local Danny Wills claimed the Milwaukee Heavy Duty Hack award for a critical layback snap. For his efforts Wills was awarded a prize pack courtesy of Milwaukee.
Participating clubs included: Angourie, Coffs Harbour, Lennox/Ballina (Le-Ba), Cabarita, Byron Bay, Sawtell and Half Tide (Evans Head).
The main base for event four of the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle Series was Pippi Beach or Turners Beach.
The nudie Australian Boardriders Battle Series will involve more than 60 of Australia’s best boardriders clubs in eight state qualifying rounds and will culminate in a National final in NSW in February 2017 for 24 clubs.
There’s $160,000 cash and prizes up for grabs for clubs across the National series including $24,000 prize money split between the 8 State events and $85,500 prize money across the National Final with the winning boardriders taking home a huge $20,000 and an overseas trip for 6 surfers from the winning club thanks to World Surfaris valued at $30,000. To top things off, there’s an additional $20,000 in prizes across the series.
The nudie Australian Boardriders Battle is officially sanctioned by the World Surf League (WSL), which allows Australian WSL Championship Tour surfers (men and women) the opportunity to represent their local boardriders club at respective state qualifying events and the national final.
The purpose of the nudie Australian Boardriders Battle program is to build the profile and capacity of community boardriders clubs Australia-wide. Over the next three years, more than $450,000 will be invested into grassroots clubs through the partnership.
Major sponsors of the 2016/17 series include the naming rights partner nudie and supporting sponsors Toyota, Oakley, Nikon, Milwaukee, Destination NSW, DrinkWise, World Surfaris, Fox Sports, World Surf League, mySURF.tv, XXXX Summer Bright Lager and Surfing Australia.
